Editorial Reviews

Writing instruments, by B. Robert, Ed. Alternatives, 6 inches x 9-½ inches ( 15 cm x 24 cm ), softcover book with 144 pages

This softcover book with 144 pages recounts the history of the writing instruments.
Writing instruments - charcoal, brush, lead pencil, goose feather - were long reserved for an elite, designated and trained to record legends, laws, divine word or more simply that of the power in place.
The advent of the graphite pencil, and especially that of the penholder and its metallic feather manufactured in series, Offered the opportunity to open this knowledge to the greatest number, serving in particular democratization
Since then, new tools have emerged: pens, Bic, felt pens, typewriters, computers, mobiles... simplifying our relationship to writing.
The author proposes a reflection both historical and typological on these instruments that condition access to knowledge and freedom of expression.

Contents:

  • Instruments consisting of a substance which leaves traces on a support
  • Hard instruments that leave a trace by deformation or removal of a part of the support more tender
  • The Middle Ages, a period rich in writings: the manuscript and the public writer
  • Instruments that transfer a plotting material onto a substrate: the premises still confidential
  • From the revolutionary utopia to the pragmatism of Jules Ferry
  • Instruments that ensure the transfer of a plotting material on a support: the path of universality
  • Instruments that transfer the trace material they contain
