This hardcover book of 320 full color pages with over 430 illustrations presents the French silversmiths of the 19th century.
A true reference work on goldsmithing in the 19th century in France, this book reports gives an account of the young collection of the Louvre Museum. The acquisition policy has been particularly active in this field these last years. This collection has thus become the most important and the most varied, For French silversmiths of the 19th century.
The 19th century experienced a period of profound renewal with the resurgence of old styles. The forms of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance are restored to the taste of the day by a number of bold goldsmiths such as Jean-Charles Cahier, goldsmith of Louis XVIII and Charles X, François-Désiré Froment-Meurice, silversmith of the City of Paris, Biennais and Odiot, goldsmiths of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the well-known Christofle.
Approximately 120 pieces of various use from the department of Art Objects of the Louvre Museum are presented: tableware, toilets sets, liturgical objects, ceremonial vases, all preserved admirably. Some remarkable pieces are to be discovered, such as the Napoleon and Marie-Louise tea service.

A compilation of biographical notes on the cited silversmiths and goldsmiths, based on research in the Archives of Paris and the National Archives, completes this work.

La politique d'acquisition a été particulièrement active en la matière ces dernières années. Cette collection est ainsi devenue la plus importante et la plus variée, pour l'orfèvrerie du XIXe siècle français.
Le XIXe siècle connaît une période de renouvellement profond avec la résurgence de styles anciens. Les formes du Moyen-Âge et de la Renaissance sont remises au goût du jour par un certain nombre d'orfèvres audacieux tels Jean-Charles Cahier, orfèvre de Louis XVIII et de Charles X, François-Désiré Froment-Meurice, argentier de la Ville de Paris, Biennais et Odiot, orfèvres attitrés de Napoléon Bonaparte, et le très réputé Christofle.
Environ 120 pièces d'usage divers provenant du département des Objets d'art du musée du Louvre sont présentées : arts de la table, nécessaire de toilettes, objets liturgiques, vases d'apparat, tous préservés de façon admirable. Certaines pièces remarquables sont à découvrir, comme le service à thé de Napoléon et de Marie-Louise.
