Editorial Reviews

Colouring, bronzing and patina of metal, by R. Hugues and M. Rowe, Ed. Vial, 8-½ inches x 11-½ inches ( 22 cm x 29 cm ), hardcover book with 216 full color pages

This hardcover book with 216 full color pages describes the basic techniques necessary for the coloring and patina of metals (from degreasing to finishing).
Almost 400 coloring recipes for bronze, copper, gilding, silvering, in red, brown, black, green, polishing and special techniques. The decorative coloring and patina of metals goes back several centuries and is found in all the great traditions of metalworking.
Although there has been a recent revival of interest in metal coloring, some of the more interesting techniques used in these traditions, which were primarily concerned with the coloring of copper and its alloys, have been largely overlooked. This is in part due to the increasing difficulty of obtaining recipes and detailed information on coloring processes.
The authors have assembled and tested the recipes included in this book, which is the most comprehensive work on the subject currently available, an essential reference and sourcebook for practitioners and all those involved in sculpture, architecture, design and the decorative arts.
It brings together hundreds of recipes and treatments previously scattered in a variety of old books and technical papers, and provides the artist-craftsman with a very wide range of coloured finishes.
Each of the recipes included has been tested and evaluated by the authors, and the practical procedures involved are clearly explained.
In addition, they have devised techniques that considerably broaden the range of surface finishes that can be obtained.
