Editorial Reviews

Miniature Painters (1650 - 1850), by N. Lemoine-Bouchard, Ed. de l'Amateur, 9-½ inches x 12-½ inches ( 24 cm x 32 cm ), hardcover book with 568 full color pages

This hardcover book with 568 color pages is a dictionary of the miniature portrait painters who worked in France or French artists who worked outside France from 1650 to 1850.
Illustrated with over 1000 pictures, this book presents over 2850 artists with their biography, miniature painters artists active in France or French artists abroad between the mid-17th century, time which saw the appearance of the word miniature, and the mid-19th century, marked by the invention of photography, including nearly 250 mentioned for the first time.
Who were the miniature painters? Behind the nebula of anonymous jobbers at the discretion of goldsmiths and small-scale amateurs, so many talented artists appear to be rediscovered... Their art was one of the most practiced in France and, paradoxically, it is those left behind in research: rare theses, few monographs and no recent study in their field. Historically, miniature painters have played on the ambiguous definition of their art, by fashion or to escape the constraints of corporations.
Accompanied by more than 1000 illustrations, the majority of which are unpublished, this book is a reference tool for professionals and art lovers alike.

The French texts are written by Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard with a foreword by Pierre Rosemberg.
